European Peace Pilgrimage 1992 A Walk across America In 1992, five centuries after Columbus initiated the European invasion of the Americas, we want go to the USA as walking peace pilgrims. Why should Europeans be walking in the USA? The US government plans festivities to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the "discovery" of the Americas. We, as Europeans in the role of ancestors of the occupying race, counter that by seeking reconciliation with Native Americans for 500 years of continuous oppression. Secondly, we feel that stopping nuclear testing is a critical step toward stopping the nuclear arms race and nuclear proliferation. Since the USA is most vehemently against a Comprehensive Test Ban (CTB), we feel the need to add our voices to the others that will be protesting at the Nevada Test Site in 1992. We believe the pilgrimage across the USA will call attention to and protest against the ongoing oppression of Native Americans, uranium mining, dumping of radioactive waste, production and testing of nuclear weapons - most done on Native American land. The Peace Pilgrimage starts February 1 with a two week orientation period. The actual Pilgrimage starts mid-February at St Mary's on the east coast of the USA (home of the Trident submarines) and finishes 4200 km away on October 12 at the Nevada Test Site. To do outreach, we intend to participate in local actions, organize speaking engagements at schools, churches and with local media, and during regular rest days, make special contact with local people. We have detailed lists of local papers, radio and TV stations along the road. One of our first targets will be the Savannah River Plant (plutonium production). In early June we plan to take part in the Native American Red Earth Festival. By early July (American Independence Day), we hope to be at the Peace Farm to participate in the Red River Peace Camp opposite the Pantex Nuclear Weapons plant in Texas, the sole assembler of all American nuclear warheads. We will probably walk past Los Alamos and cross Navajo and Hopi country. We aim to arrive at the Nevada Test Site by October 8 in time to participate in the "Columbus Day" activities planned for October 12. This will be the last day of the Pilgrimage.
